ATHENS - Just about every time an event went off at the District 4 Track and Field Championships it seemed like another Wellsboro girl was earning a trip to the state meet.

The Green Hornets qualified a total of six girls in seven different events on the day, led by a perfect 4-for-4 effort by sophomore Taylor Acorn.

The highlight of the day for the Green Hornets came in the 4x400 relay where the team broke their school record with a time of 3:59.35. The time also broke the district record, but Wellsboro had to settle for second behind a Lewisburg team that ran 3:58.56.

The old district record was 4:04.96 set by Montoursville in 2003 and the Wellsboro team of Acorn, Regan Rogers, Raina Rogers and Getty, along with Lewisburg, each broke the mark by more then five seconds.

"We were hoping for it," Getty said of getting below four minutes. "But, we really were expecting more like 4:05."

Getty got the team off to a fast start and Regan Rogers extended the lead. By the time Raina Rogers took the baton the Green Hornets were well in front.

"It was a good feeling," Raina Rogers said. "It was nice to have the lead."

Acorn took the baton with a slight lead over Lewisburg, but the Green Dragons had Kalyn Fisher, who broke the district record in the 800 and won the state title in the event last year, to close things out.

"I knew we would have a really good time today," Acorn said. "I was hoping we would at least PR. And, we did better then that."

While the Green Hornets couldn't catch Lewisburg on this day, they know they will get another chance.

"I'm looking forward to going against them again next week," Regan Rogers said.

Regan Rogers had a special day of her own as she also picked up wins in the triple jump at 35-feet, 9 3/4-inches and she won the high jump at 5-feet, 7-inches.

The jump in the high jump broke the district record of 5-feet, 5-inches set by Liberty's Kristin Wirth in 1992 and it broke Wellsboro's school mark.

"I'm really excited, I have been working toward this for a very long time," Rogers said.

One of the things that helped Rogers as she jumped was the support of her teammates and coaches.

"They make it a lot of fun," she said. "There are a lot of people around that support me."

And after earning a fourth-place finish at states last year Rogers is hoping for a state gold this time around.
