McDuffee, Sutton head All-Region team

After leading her team to the New York State, Class C state final, Tioga's Kara McDuffee heads The Daily & Sunday Review All-Region team, earning player of the year honors.

This year the competition was even harder to make the cut as the coverage region expanded to include the NTL West, along with the East, Sullivan County, Tioga and Waverly in New York and North Rome Christian.

Despite the talent throughout the region, McDuffee stood out, putting up 21.4 points a contest and also grabbing 9.5 rebounds a game, while dishing out 4.3 assists and getting 4.4 steals a night. McDuffee also blocked 1.8 shots a contest and she set school records with 514 points this year and 1,544 for her career, with another year to go.

While McDuffee earns the player of the year nod, Towanda's Kylee Sutton led the region in scoring at 23 points a contest and she is the offensive player of the year. Sutton also pulled in 10 rebounds a contest for the Black Knights.

The defensive player of the year is Troy's Courtney Mattocks, who despite being a guard was able to defend everyone from Athens center Taylor Clark, holding her to two points in a Troy win; to Wellsboro guard Alex Marple, holding her to five points in a district game. Offensively Mattocks averaged 8.2 points a game.

The rookie of the year is Athens' Monica Dougherty, who put up 10.8 points a game, along with 4.5 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 3.0 steals a game during her freshman campaign.

The coach of the year is Joe Robinson, who guided the Tigers to the state title in New York.

McDuffee, Sutton and Mattocks lead the first-team candidates and McDuffee is joined on the first team by teammate Kacie Hoyt, who averaged 12.1 points, 3.0 assists and 2.7 steals a contest.

Sutton's teammate Mariah Monahan is also on the first team after she put up 11.1 points a contest, along with 6.1 assists and 4.4 steals a game.

Joining the group on the first team is Sayre's Elizabeth Higley, who averaged 16.6 points a game and also grabbed 10.2 rebounds a contest, while blocking 2.6 shots a game.

Sullivan County's Reilly Gavitt is on the first team after averaging 15.5 points a game and Marple put up 17.2 points a contest in her junior year to earn a spot on the first team.
