CHICAGO – A furious second half rally came up short for Rochester as the University of Chicago prevailed, 73-64, in a women’s basketball game at the Ratner Athletic Center.

Rochester trailed, 40-17, at the break after shooting just 23% in the first 20 minutes (7 of 31) and not hitting any three point shots (0-9). In the second half, the Yellowjackets hit 42% from the floor (13-31), 36% outside the arc (5-14) and 80% from the line (16-20).

Kate Agan(Elmira Lady Express) scored 17 of her career high 19 points in the second half. For the game, she hit 8 of 11 from the floor, 2 of 3 outside the arc. She added four rebounds, one block, and three steals. Melissa Alwardt scored 13 points (including 11 of 11 from the line), had five rebounds, and seven assists.

Meghan Herrick led Chicago with 11 points and Taylor Simpson scored 10 in 22 minutes off the bench. Chicago shot 48% from the floor in the first half (15-31) and 40% in the second half (10-25). The Maroons won the rebound battle, 40-37.

Chicago used runs of 9-0 and 12-0 to seize a 31-9 lead with six minutes left in the first half. The first half lead peaked at 25 points, 40-15, after a layup by Bryanne Halfhill. Alwardt’s jumper in the last 11 seconds made it 40-17 Chicago at the break.

Rochester cut the deficit into the mid-teens a couple of times in the second half. Two Alwardt free throws got Rochester within 58-42 with 7:35 left. Jodie Luther scored four points and Agan had one as Rochester pulled within 65-54 with 2:26 left.

The Yellowjackets are 15-5 overall, 5-4 in the University Athletic Association. Chicago is 15-5, 7-2 in the UAA.
